## Building a System, Not Just a Product

We could sell you a warm down sleeping bag and call it a day. But if you're lying on a mat that isn't up to the job, that sleeping bag isn't going to save you: the ground will still pull the heat straight out of you. So we think about a sleep system in layers, from the ground up: what's underneath you, what's around you, and how those pieces work together.

Before thinking about gear, it helps to understand why you get cold in the first place. There are two mechanisms worth knowing about:

## What R-Value Actually Means

You'll see sleeping mats and mattresses rated with an "R-value," and it's simply a measure of insulation: how much a material resists heat loss. It's tested in a lab: the mat is placed between a cold surface and a heated plate, and the plate is held at a set temperature. The less energy it takes to keep that plate at temperature, the better the mat is insulating, and the higher its R-value.

In real-world terms, the higher the R-value, the less heat is going to transfer away from your body into the ground overnight, and the warmer you'll be.

**The R-value scale, roughly speaking:**

- **R2–R3:** A summer proposition. Fine down to around three to five degrees celcius, but not built for below zero.
- **R4–R5.5:** A solid all-rounder. This range will keep you warm into negative temperatures, especially paired with a good sleeping bag and some merino layers.
- **R7-9:** Alpine territory, built for conditions down around minus 10 to minus 20.
- **R10–R12+:** This is house-insulation territory, well beyond what you'd need for camping.

## How Insulated Sleeping Mats Work

## Sleeping Bag Liners

A sleeping bag liner is a lightweight layer you climb into before you get into your sleeping bag, and it does a few useful things at once. It adds a bit of extra warmth: a lightweight liner can add several degrees of warmth to your existing bag. It also helps break up air circulation inside the bag the same way the partition layers do in a mat, and it keeps the inside of your sleeping bag cleaner, which can be nice over a long trip. The trade-off is it adds some weight and bulk, so it's about deciding whether the benefits are worth it for the weight in your situation.

## Pump Sacks and Keeping Moisture Out

A pump sack is not only convenient, it also directly contributes to the overall warmth of your sleep system. Rather than blowing directly into your mat with your mouth, a pump sack is designed to transfer a large volume of air into the mat with minimal actual blowing.

**How to use it properly:**

1. Fill the pump sack by blowing from a short distance away, rather than sealing your mouth to the opening.
2. Blowing from a distance draws in a volume of ambient air around you as well as your breath: you end up moving several times more air into the sack than your lungs alone would provide.
3. Roll or seal the sack and push that air into your mat.
4. Repeat until the mat is firm, using the valve to fine-tune firmness if needed.

Why bother? Two reasons. First, your own breath carries moisture, and moisture inside an inflatable sleeping mat over time can lead to mould. Second, warm air from your body cools and contracts more overnight than cooler ambient air does, so a mat filled with your warm breath is more likely to noticeably lose volume by morning, leaving you closer to the cold ground than when you went to sleep. Filling it with cooler ambient air instead means it holds its volume, and its insulation, much better through the night.
